ins. My information upon this point was derived from Prof.George Davidson, who for many years had charge of the work on thePacific Coast. The last movement of the land by which the Oregon coast came toits present position w as one of subsidence. The sea advanced over theland, and the border of the coast already referred to became pari of the bottom. This movement had a marked effectu) therivers. They are drowned on the lower portion of their courses, and the title comesfar inland. In the case of the Coquille the tide follows up the river toMyrtle Point, a distance of 40 miles. PART II. ECONOMIC GEOIiOGl . Having considered the region embraced within the reconnaissancewith reference to if s geological structure and history, we ran now moreintelligently turn our attention to the deposits of economic importanceassociated witli the various formations. COAL. 491 THE COAL FIELDS OF WESTERN OREGON. Oregon has long been known as one of the coal-producing States ofthe Pacific Coast, but until this season no systematic attempt has beenmade to take a comprehensive view of the whole field to determine thegeological position and areal distribution of the coal-bearing rocks. This could be done at the present time only in a preliminary way, inas-much as the topographic maps of tlie country, upon which the produc-tive districts could be outlined, have not yet been made. When thetopographic surveys, already well advanced about Eoseburg and CoosBay, shall have been extended over the whole of Oregon west of theCascade Range, and the maps published, it will be possible to showdefinitely the lateral extent of the coal regions. The coal fields of Oregon so far as yet known all lie west of theCascade Range and north of Rogue River. Most of them are amongthe mountains generally known in Oregon as the Coast Range, butothers occur at the western foot of
