Not only has a large areaof Southern Arabia been unvisited by any European,and the rest is but imperfectly known, but much ofTibet proper, and the regions bordering it on thenorth and north-east, and even the south-east, arepractically blank on our maps. Considerable areasto the north-west of Tibet and within the Russiansphere, are most imperfectly known. Indeed, theonly thoroughly surveyed countries in Asia,are India and its dependencies, Japan, Siamand certain sections of the Russian sphere, mainlyalong railway routes. China is roughly mapped,but the gigantic task of surveying it has still to becarried out. Patches here and there in WesternAsia have been fairly well mapped, but as a wholethe great continent is either unmapped or mappedin only a very rough fashion.
