Summary[edit]
DescriptionApproaching Rhiwbach Quarry from the east along the Cwm Penmachno track - geograph.org.uk - 596027.jpg |
English: Approaching Rhiwbach Quarry from the east along the Cwm Penmachno track This track has a long history. In the early days of the quarry, in the late 18th and early 19thC, finished slate was brought down this way to be shipped from the inland port of Trefriw SH7863. From the 1860s onwards it was also used by employees who lived in the Cwm Penmachno area. There is an interesting photo dating from 1925 of a 5 ton A.E.C. lorry which was used to bring men up to as far as Rhiwfachno Quarry SH7547. Fifty men were crammed on to the back of the solid tyred lorry which took an hour to travel from Penmachno village SH7850to Cwm - a distance of only 4km. They then had to climb the track to Rhiwbach on foot - another half hour journey. Today, the improved track is maintained by Forestry Enterprise. |
