In crit-icism of contemporaneous manifestationsthat are forced more like stunts rather thanthoughtful, logical development. Mr. Pondsaid of such w^ork. THE ARCHITECT AND ENGINEER -^ 20 ► APRIL, NINETEEN THIRTY-THREE A HILLSIDE HOME IN PASADENA by JAMES R. FERGUSON (71 r„ HE site of this lovelyPasadena residence was chosen largelybecause of its attractive, unobstructed viewof the mountains. The property is ownedby Clarence B. Piper and faces on twostreets with an approximate difference inlevels of thirty feet in a depth of lot ofthree hundred feet. This somewhat ex-treme slope to the east, combined withthe problem of filled ground, made itdoubly desirable to dig as deeply as pos-sible and take advantage of the exca-vated areas. This was done by placing thegarage, boiler rooms, etc.. on the sub-base-ment levels, with maids quarters, laundryroom, amusement room, office and generalutility rooms at the basement level. Eachfloor level wasprovided with broad, plantedterraces adjoining, all held in place by highconcrete retaining walls.
