rts Building is the mammoth structure ofthe Exposition. It measures 1,687 by 787 feet and coversnearly 42 acres, being the largest Exposition Building everconstructed. Within the building a gallery 50 feet wideextends around all four sides, and projecting from this are86 smaller galleries, 12 feet wide, from which visitors maysurvey the vast array of exhibits and the busy scene below.The galleries are approached upon the main floor by 30 greatstaircases, the flights of which are 12 feet wide each. Col-umbia Avenue, 50 feet wide, extends through the mammothbuilding longitudinally, and an avenue of like width crossesit at right angles at the center. The main roof is of iron andglass and arches an area 385 by 1400 feet, and has its ridge150 feet from the ground. The building, including its galler-ies, has about 42 acres of floor space. The long arrayof columns and arches, which its facades present, is relievedfrom monotony by very elaborate ornamentation. In thisornamentation female figures, symbolical of the various artsand sciences play a conspicuous and very attractive part. The exterior of the building is covered with staff,which is treated to represent marble. The huge flutedcolumns and the immense archer are apparently of thisbeautiful material. There are four great entrances, one in the center of eachfacade. These are designed in the manner of triumphal arches,the central arch way of each being* 40 feet wide and 80 feethigh* Surmounting these portals is the great attic storyornamented with eagles 18 feet high, and on each side abovethe side arches are great panels with inscriptions, and thespandrils are filled with sculptured figures in bas-reliefs.
