I aint risking a thinghere, while the boys at the front arerunning all the chances. Its just plainevery-day work with me, as though therewasnt any war. I aint doing my shareand Im going to resign and enlist, thatsall. Wait a minute, said the old man.Lets figure this thing out. Lets sup-pose your best friend was having analmighty tough tussle with another chap.For the sake of argument lets say theywas fighting with bricks—although theymay not have been Irishmen, at that.

He asksyou to keep supplying him with bricks.Wouldnt you be a blasted fool to insiston fighting, when youd both run out ofbricks in a little while? Wouldnt it bebetter to keep supplying him with thebricks he needs? Dad lit his pipe,which had gone out through lack of at-tention. Go on, said Jimmy. Imlistening. Well, Uncle Sam is your best friend.Hes having the worst tussle of his lifewith a mighty strong enemy. He canget enough men to fight for him—if hessupplied with enough stuff for them tofight with. Hes got to have the bricks!And thats why a lot of us have got tostay at home and keep the stuff movingto him. If we all go over and fight,soon well all run out of bricks. Andwhen the war is won, wont the fellowswho kept the supplies going over to oursoldiers deserve a lot of credit, too? Iknow how
