But to the inward boundmariner, the aspect of these mountains has ever been a solid wall ofgranite, precipitous and frowning, perpendicular or beetle-browed, and itis no wonder that when Champlain in his pattache, coasted along herenearly three centuries ago, and saw these bold peaks rising as it wereout of the bosom of the ocean, should name the place the Isle of theDesert Mountains. And thus they will ever remain; and while theIsland may become dotted all over with summer cottages, while therough and waste places may be changed to gardens and beautiful lawns,while all around and beneath them may be made to bud and blossom asthe rose, these everlasting mountains will remain as tliey are, wild andweird yet majestic and grand, enduring monuments of the stupendousforces of nature. ^>5-1c) @J^(^^-

In many respects it is unexcelled byany combination of natural views on the entire North Atlantic coast.Here upon one hundred square miles of territory are found thirteenmountain peaks varying, in height from 700 to 1,500 feet above the sealevel, seventeen ponds or lakes from a few acres to several square milesin area, deep gorges, and picturesque glens, bold promontories and broadstretches of forest, sparkling streams of water, with bays, harbors, covesand indentations of every variety and form.
