Presentation Address BY The HonorableWilliam Hoavard Taft WHEN we read of the origin of Lin-coln, the squalor of his early sur-roundings, the ignorance and shift-less character of his father, and have so littleknowledge of the traits and intelligence of hismother, it seems as difficult to explain what hedid, what he was, and what he is now in theestimate of his countrymen and of the world,as it is to reconcile the origin and education ofShakespeare and his immortal plays.
