The Afghans were ahvays trouble-some neighbours, and again in 1878 the insolenceof the Ameer led to a new invasion. It wascalled a triumphal progress ; but there wassome hard fighting—some brilliant feats of arms.The capture of the fort of Ali Musjid by SirSam Brownes column, the crowning of thePeiwar Kotal, and the opening of the Shutur-gardan Pass by General Roberts were successfuloperations that were followed by the flight ofthe Ameer, and paved the way to the treatyof Gandamak, by which we placed a new Ameeron the throne and stationed a British residentat his court. The second invasion of Afghanistan, in theautumn of 1879, was to revenge the base murderof this resident, Sir Louis Cavagnari, in Cabul, andit resulted in important operations.
