the extreme westernportion of North Carolina. , Maintenance The roads in this county are at present in a very unsatisfactory condition, duepartly to lack of funds and also to lack of adequate equipment to carry on the work.There are no organized maintenance force in the county, which makes efficient workimpossible even though funds were available. JOHNSTON At a meeting of the State Highway Commission held on June 17, 1919, an appli-cation for Federal Aid was granted to this county for the improvement of 6.0 milesof road on the Fayetteville-Smithfield Highway, between the Harnett County lineand the Ingram township line, the project being designated as No. 58. Followingthe survey and completion of plans bids were opened on April 7, 1920, at which timethe contract was awarded to P. R. Ashby, of Raleigh, the contract, including tenper cent added for engineering and unforeseen contingencies, amounting to $67,-927.25. Construction was begun on the project on May 20, 1920. I
