inother large ))arrakeet belongmgto a weak-l)illed si)ecies. liarn owls are liss destructive to bird life. Nowand again they take .-i liiicli, but nnt often and though individuals will attackbig birds, they are the eNcei)tion and not the rule. The Little Owl prefers mice to birds, and insects to either, as may bepro\ed b\- anyone keeping it as a pet. \\hen breeding it kills a good manyvoung blackbirds, thrushes, and starlings, and will not infrequently takepartridge and pheasant chicks, as well. 1-ience its bad reputation. It isquite untrue to say th;it it is destructive to finches and small insectivorousbirds, the whole year mund. I know a garden inhabited 1)\- a pair of LittleOwls where robins, wrens, fits, nuthatclu-s and finches siniiilv sw-arni and Ihave ne\-er found their remains in the I^ittle Ow-ls iiellets. My aviaries were built about two years a,t;o. and. as T havekept a consi(leral)le variety of 1:)irds in tliem with a considerableamount of success, perhaps a short description of them and theirinmates may be of interest and use to some of our members, even if they are situated so far away from Enj^land. I had better state here that the Southern Californianclimate, genial though it be, is subject to very sudden drops intemperature, so that bird keeping has its drawbacks here as wellas anywhere else, and forei,qn birds are just as diflficult toacclimatise here as in Great Britain. I have kept birds in bothcountries and have come to the conclusion that, enerally speak-ing, birds which will not winter out of doors successfully inEngland need not be expected to do so in California. Had Irealised this fact sooner T would have saved
