BONAPARTE^S GULL, (Lams Philadelphia.) LYNDS JONES. THE whole of North America isthe home of this pretty littlegull—from the Bermudas toLabrador on the east, Californiato the Yukon on the west, and fromthe Gulf of Mexico at least to the Arc-tic circle. This species is often com-mon near streams and other bodies ofwater large enough to furnish theirfood of fish. I have often seen flocksof twenty or more birds passing overcentral Iowa during the vernal migra-tions, sometimes even stooping tosnatch some toothsome grub from thefreshly turned furrow, but oftenersweeping past within easy range inthat lithe, graceful flight so character-istic of this small gull. To the farmboy, shut in away from any body ofwater larger than an ice pond, whereno ocean birds could ever be expectedto wander, the appearance of this bird,bearing the wild freedom of the oceanin his every movement, is truly arevelation.
