eeks. If I thought Robin Red-breast would be looking out for anotherhousekeeper so soon after my death hewould not have such a good wife as hehas to-day. He would have to hunt moreworms and bugs than he does, instead ofjust bringing home a little bit of dessertin the shape of cherries or grapes toplease the children; and the motherfluffed up her feathers alarmingly. That makes me think, said Mrs.Thrush, that I promised the children anespecially nice supper to-night if theywould not chirp or stick up their heads-and look over the edge of the nest. Theyare really getting so big now that Mr.Thrush and I can do nothing with them.Last night when I went home I foundmy eldest son, Brown Thrush, sitting onthe edge of the nest, and he is taller Just then a large shadow wavered overthe sunshiny sward, and with a scared ex-clamation of Hawk! the birds flewswiftly in different directions, not waitingto see that the object which cast theshadow was nothing but a harmless paperkite. THE MARBLED MURRELET. (Brachyramphus marmoratus Thi9 little bird belongs to the family ofauks and puffins, the guillemots and thedovekie. It is the sea bird family(Alcidae) for all the species aremaritime, spending most of their time onthe ocean. Nearly all the species fre-quent the Pacific coast of North America.A few are, however, found on the Atlan-tic coast. They seem to frequent thewildest and most rocky shores and gen-erally congregate in large colonies whichmay include several species. Their struc-ture unfits them for locomotion on theland where they move in an uncouth andawkward manner, but they are agile andquick swimmers and expert divers. It issaid that they will remain under water forseveral minutes, swimming for long dis- tances. They use their wings in diving. The Marbled Murrelet inhabits the coastof the Pacific ocean from San Diego, Cal-ifornia, northward, breeding only in thenorthern part of its range. These birdsare seldom found at any great distanceinland. It is said
