lorson the upper parts; gray usually pre-dominates in the spring, the black in mid-summer. Sometimes there is no rufouswhatever on the upper surface. Thecinnamon color of the lower parts alsovaries in intensity. Little is known of the nest and eggs ofthe Knot owing to its retiring habits atthe nesting time and the fact that it breedsin the region of the Arctic Circle, so lit-tle frequented by man. One authentic re-port, that of Lieutenant A. W. Greely,describes a single egg that he succeededin obtaining near Fort Conger whilecommanding an expedition to LadyFranklin Sound. This egg was a littlemore than an inch in length and about oneinch in diameter. Its color was a lightpea-green, closely spotted with brown insmall specks about the size of a pinhead. VIOLA BLANDA. I know if Ad-miral Dewey could see me he would feelproud of his namesake, as I am said to bean unusually handsome, intelligent bird.I have been laughing in my wings formany months, hearing people say whatkind of a bird I am. Some say I am anoriole; some a male, others a female; an-other a meadowlark; another not a mead-owlark, but some kind of lark. Onething they agree upon, that I go on alark from early morn till Dewey eve.I am said to have a little of the bluejay,and points like dozens of birds. WhenI was about six weeks old I was quitelarge and fluffy, but very much of a baby,for I knew nothing about feeding myself.My tail was long, olive on top, yellowunderneath; wings black, with creamcolor on the edges—on the lower feathersjust a line, on the upper ones quite a lit-tle wider, at the top short yellow feathers,making lovely little scallops; head andback olive-bro
