If wedid the same, it continued and seldomfailed to wear out our patience. If weadvanced, it would lower itself and squaton the moss or bare rock untilapproached, when it would suddenly riseon its feet, drop its wings, depress itshead and run with great speed to a con-siderable distance, uttering all the whilea low, rolling and querulous cry, verypleasing to the ear. On being surprisedwhen in charge of their young, theywould open their wings to the full extent,and beat the ground with their extreme-ties, as if unable to rise. If pursued,they allowed us to come within a fewfeet, then took flight and attempted todecoy us away from their young, whichlay so close that we very seldom discov-ered them; but which, on being traced,ran swiftly off uttering a plaintive peep,often repeated, that never failed to bringtheir parents to their aid. 204
