this helpless little creature, for being thecolor of his background he is not so eas-ily seen, and thus escapes from his ene-mies. Take a toad which is yellow andwhose home is on yellow sand, and puthim in a place where the ground is darker in color and in a short time hewill turn dark. Many people believe that when thetoad is angry he will spit blood andproison, but this is not true. He is themost harmless and gentle of creatures, and if teased will run away. I have been told that when he isfrightened one of his eyes will swell un-til blood spurts in a stream from it, butI have never known this to happen. These helpless little creatures arecaught in great quantities and chloro-formed, then stuffed and sold to curiodealers. Many boys are on the lookout for them,as by catching and selling- them they canmake a little money. A family of Horned Toads lived underthe hedge at Los Gatos, California, whereI spent last summer. It was a very inter-esting to watch them. Henrietta Lee Coulling. 11

It is far from commonalong the Atlantic coast excepting atCobbs Island, Virginia, where it breedsin numbers, though the individuals ofthis species were not as numerous aswere those of the common or WilsonsTern. In appearance as w^ell as in its habits,Forsters Tern resembles the commontern (Sterna hirundo). The two speciesmay, however, be distinguished by thecolor of the outer tail feathers; those ofForsters Tern having the inner websdarker colored than the outer webs, whilethe reverse is characteristic of the samefeathers in the common tern. The twospecies may also be distinguished whenon the wing by the peculia
