English: Bo Peep Bostal Bostal is a Sussex word for a steep path up the side of the Downs and in a few cases those paths have been metalled mostly during the Second World War to allow better access. This route is quite ancient as it is built over a former Roman terraceway that carried a minor route from what is now Newhaven to the former Roman agricultural communities at Dicker. Bo Peep comes from a phrase to look out and in this case there are a couple of suggestions where the road derived its name; one is that its named after a particularly officious toll collector on the Old Coach Road; the other comes from the 18th century smuggling fraternity which would have used this route to collect cargo from the beaches between Newhaven and Seaford then carried them inland to their bases in Wealden villages such as Groombridge, Mayfield and Hawkhurst. |
