THE WILD LIFE 95 cover hundreds of acres of prairie with blue and yellow andred and riots of various colors. The primroses madefamous by De Vries, the phloxes of many colors, euphor-bias, salvias, Texas plumes, Texas fire wheels, asters, rainlilies, orange cosmos, coreopses, and paint cups are widelyand abundantly scattered. The hyacinth, the parrot feather,the calladium, and the algae grow in the lasting streamsand ponds not much subject to overflow, sometimesblocking them with luxuriance. Among vines there arethe clematis and convolvulus, the smilax and the passionflower, ipomea and grapes, poison oak and ivy. Naturalflower gardens and parks are to be found offset by uncov-ered, sun-beaten slopes that have also their charm to onewho has learned to know them. Mistletoe is so abundantas to be something of a pest. In south Texas the longgray Spanish moss hangs in dense and beautiful clustersfrom many trees, especially from live oaks in the bottoms.
