Description
  • Scope and content: This file unit consists of correspondence related to Boon Island Light off of York, Maine received by Henry Dearborn and his son and successor Henry A. S. Dearborn in their capacities as Superintendents of Massachusetts Lighthouses, collateral to serving as Collectors of the Port of Boston. Included are letters recommending various individuals for the post of lighthouse keeper, as well as correspondence from Lighthouse Keepers David Oliver, Thomas Hanna, and Eliphalet Grover regarding expenses and repairs to the lighthouse and its boat. Also included are letters from Treasury Secretary Albert Gallatin authorizing expenses for the construction of the light and announcing the appointment of the first lighthouse keeper.
