d too strong for his fathers intentions,so the doctor, after vainly attempting to turn him away from his purposeby opposing every obstacle, consented to his coming to London to enterthe Royal Academy as a pupil. Arrived in the metropolis, Mr. Dyce wasadmitted a probationer, after passing through the customary form of showinghis drawings to the authorities of the Academy. These drawings were madeat the Egyptian Hall, in the exhibition-rooms of the once well-known Mr. Day,with whom, and with his friend the late Mr. Holwell Carr, the young artist hadbecome intimate. It chanced that Day was then about to visit Rome, andhe strongly persuaded Mr. Dyce—his advice being also backed by that of Mr.Carr—to pursue his studies in Italy rather than in England, offering at thesame time to be his companion on the journey: the consent of Dr. Dyce wasobtained, and the travellers set forth in the autumn of 1825.
