Design, Craftsmanship and the Imitationof Nature in Ancient Art ^ ALONG acquaintance with ancient art, from the timeof the Greeks and Assyrians to the end of the me-dicBval epoch, has made its general character so famihar tothe writer that modern art appears, as a whole, sharply incontrast with that which for so long has heen the method ofart of all nations. This generalization arose by an uncon-scious and intuitive perception, but it was later analyzedcritically. I say this to explain how the point of view grewup which I seek to communicate. In mediteval and other ancient art, as a whole, thereseems to have been no desire for a purely realistic treat-ment. Of course there are cases in which there is somerealism, as in the earliest art of all, the prehistoric carvingsand paintings in France and INIesopotamia. We find itagain in late Roman sculpture and painting, and in somemediawal art. But even in these cases the realistic tendencyis rarely separated from decorative design. What was
