Text Appearing Before Image:
kingdom, which was far more populous and power-ful than the small remuant which remained loyal tothe family of David. That loyalty, however, ap-pears to bave been a deep-rooted sentiment, and tohâve kept the southern kingdom tolerably free fromthe scramble for the sovereignty which disturbed andfinally wrecked the northern. The record which wehâve of both is exceedingly imperfect, and in thematter of building we hear chiefly of repairs doneto the wall of Jérusalem, of the occasional érectionof towers, and of provisions made for a better watersupply. The only inscription in Jérusalem which isfrom the period of the kings is that which recordsthe construction of an aqueduct in the time of KirigHezekiah. This aqueduct, which took the form ofa tunnel, appears to hâve been commenced at bothends at once, a fact which implies the existence ofgreater engineering skill, and instruments of greaterprécision, than we should ordinarily suppose to hâvebeen possessed by the Jews. Text Appearing After Image:
A CAIRO, JERUSALEM, AND DAMASCUS The condition of Jérusalem during the period ofthe divided kingdom, as the Book of Kings recordsit, was by no means one of quiet development; it was,on the contrary, one of perpétuai disturbance, inwhich city and Temple were repeatedly sacked, varied at times by spells of peace and prosperityunder some compétent ruler. The maintenance ofthe Temple was, it would seem, during the wholetime, the chief function of the King, and accordingto the influences to which différent kings were sub-ject many innovations were introduced, both in thestructure of the sanctuary and in the form of ritual. The unfriendly attitude adopted by the Jewishreligion towards ail others appears at least in prac-tice to date from the last century of the monarchy;previously Jérusalem contained sanctuaries dedicatedto objects of worship other than the God of Israël,and the Temple itself at times harboured altars ofmore than one Deity. The record which has comedown to us of Jewish
