ll very well to bring up the ex-cuse of the high cost of living now ; butwe know, and I am certain that you do.that for years these people have been inthe habit of catching steelhead in theclosed season and salting them down. I will quote you the law on this sub-ject : Every person who takes, catches, kills or has in his possession during one calendar day more than fifty trout, or ten pounds of trout and one trout, or one trout weighing ten pounds and over, is guilty of a misdemeanor. You will find in all districts a certainclass who wish the laws made to suittheir own convenience, and when they cannot have their own way immediately startin to criticise the Fish and Game Com-mission. I believe that you will find that it isour duty to see that the fish and gamelaws are obeyed. We do not make thelaws, but at times are requested to makesuggestions i-egarding changes, etc., andwhenever we do so, believe me, it isalways for the conservation of the fishand game. 44 CALIFORNIA FISH AND GAME.

CALIFORNIA FISH AND GAME. 45 You say in your lettor you commendthe intention of the hiws that are for thepreserTation of both fish and game. Ifso. would it not be well for you to assistus in our work by talking to the peoplein your district where, you know foryears, botli fish and veui.son have beensalted down in large quantities; and donot rush into print condemning us for something that you have shown plainlyyou are not familiar with. Knowing you as I do, I feel it my dutyto call your attention to many misstate-ments in your letter published in theChronicle. The public is often misled inthis way and the Fish and Game Ck>m-mis.sion is unduly criticised.Yours truly, (Signed) E. L. BosQUi. HATCHERY NOTES. W. H. Sheblet. Editor.
