and a current of air inducedthrough the washer by means of the spray. A spray system, in which an endeavor is madeto provide sheets of water, produces consider-able resistance. If a perfect curtain or spraysheet was maintained, no air could pass. It istherefore necessary for the air currents toactually punch holes in the sheet. These holes,which are often inches in diameter, may be seenwith the naked eye showing that a thoroughmixture of air and spray is not procured in thismanner. b. Eliminators and washing surface are so shortthat the surface friction amounts to practicallynothing, as may be readily shown by passingthe air at the same velocity between straightparallel plates of equal length. The greatestresistance is caused by the baffling of the air,changing its direction, and setting up eddy cur-rents.
