Description
Italiano: Al termine della costruzione di opere edili quali casa, masseria, edifici pubblici e religiosi, era consuetudine, arrivata fino a noi dalle culture greche e romane, porre sull'architrave, alla sommità del portone oppure in altro luogo ben esposto agli sguardi altrui, una maschera in pietra, in terracotta oppure in legno scolpito. Si riteneva, e spesso si ritiene ancora che servisse per tenere lontano dalla costruzione il malocchio e gli spiriti maligni. Molto spesso era rappresentata nella maschera una figura demoniaca, con la lingua esposta, con corna vistose sulla fronte e comunque in atteggiamento minaccioso.
