In recent times it has been invested with greataccuracy by the use of a polarimeter constructed on the principle devisedby Lippich. This instrument is represented in fig. 136.369 It is em-ployed thus:— The graduated disc is turned towards the observer, and the tubetowards the lamp, and the cap which covers the telescope and theposterior end of the apparatus is removed. The lamp is placed at adistance (45 cm.) equal to the length of the instrument itself. Car-bonate of soda is placed in the cage attached to the lamp, and fuseduntil the receptacle is full. The latter is then fixed in the lamp insuch a way as to be in contact with the flame at the side only, and ascreen is so placed that the light passes only through the aperturein it. THE URINE

The second rod is fittedwith a screw, by means of which it moves upon the first, and can befixed in contact with the latter. When the line upon the upper surfaceof the adjustable rod corresponds to the central point (o) of the metallicarc, and this with the o of the vernier, the entire field is dark, and byrotating the arc (which is done with the ivory lever in front) bothhalves will be obscured or illuminated equally. In experimenting withthe instrument, the adjustable rod is deflected slightly to the right orto the left. It is practically a lever attached to the box containing aNicol prism (d in the section, which is represented as seen from above),and rotates the prism
