Nanos is a high karst plateau in a mountain barrier that separates the continental part of Slovenia from the Littoral. It is a 12 km long and up to 6 km wide karst plateau with a steeply cut edge called Pleša. Next to Snežnik, it is the most characteristic mountain in the Notranjska region.

On the east side it is separated by the Predjama fault from the karst plateau of Hrušica, and on the west by the valley of Bela separates it from the plateau of Trnovski gozd. Steep slopes, 500 to 700 m high on the west side, separate it from the Vipava and Pivka basins, more difficult access is only from the north. The surface of the plateau is eroded into elongated valleys, sinkholes and jagged peaks, the highest of which rises Suhi vrh (1313 m) in the southeast. Altitudes of around 1100 m predominate, the western half is lower (800-950 m) and less rocky.

The forested plateau is visited by mountaineers and paragliders. The deposit is crossed by the Slovenian Mountain Transversal and the Slovenian Geological Trail. At the Pleša lookout point (1262 m) there is a television converter, and Vojkova koča hut is nearby.
