bers. It is most favorably placed for health, pictur-esque views, and as a centre for canoeing, driving,walking or moimtain climbing. There are also asanatarium and hospital in the village, and a museumof more than local interest has been established bythe Government. Eight miles from Banff is LakeMinnewanka, upon which a fine launch has beenplaced. There is capital fishing, the trout being ofextraordinary size. Wild sheep (the bighorn) andmountain goats are occasionally to be seen on theneighboring heights. Some wonderful fossil remainsand markings of mammoth pre-historic creatures arefound on the mountain slopes surrounding this lake,as well as on Cascade Mountain. At the upper end ofthe lake is the valley of Ghost River, a strange regionwhere the mountain rivulets gurgle off into subter-ranean reservoirs and the granite walls are pittedwith caves. The hot springs are at different elevations ;upon the eastern slope of Sulphur Mt., the highest be- Iing 900 ft. above the Bow. All are reached by fineroads, commanding glorious landscapes. The moreimportant springs have been improved by the Govern-ment, and picturesque bathing houses have beenerected and placed under the care of attendants. Inone locality is a pool inside a dome-roofed cave, en- jered by an artificial tunnel; and near by another ispring forms an open basin of warm, sulphurouswater. Since the opening of the railway thesesprings have been largely visited, and testimony totheir wonderful curative properties is plentiful.Twenty miles south of Banff is Mt.
