It will beseen that this isquite elaboratein detail, and thatthe lines are sodisposed as tomake it a strong-ly marked fea-ture of the wholepattern. The Iron Grate,on page 383, wasexhibited in theextensive displaymade by Steel& Garland, ofSheffield, Eng-land. The prin-cipal feature ofthe work, asidefrom the generaldesign, is the decoration of the panels. These have been enriched with figures, executed inlow relief, in imitation of Japanese work of a like nature. The effect is novel INDUSTRIAL ART. 389

Lobmeyr, of Vienna, furnishes us with another illustra- 39Q THE INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITI0N, 1876. tion in the Glass Plaque engraved on page 384. The characteristics of theworkmanship in this beautiful object are the same as have been previouslydescribed in connection with other art-works from the same collection. ThePlaque consists of a ruby red glass welded on to a transparent crystal. Thepattern, as seen in our illustration, is then cut through from one surface to theother. The effect is strikingly beautiful. Other portions of the pattern areafterwards worked in with gilding to increase the richness of the design. Asall the cutting has been done on the under side, the surface is perfectly smoothand polished ; but in order to get the full effect, the Plaque should be viewedin transmitted light, when a prismatic effect of color is obt
