Germany nowpays toll to Denmark for much of her trade with the northern king-dom, but if goods could be transported across the peninsula at rateslow enough to make Gothenburg the chief shipping port, exportsmight thence be carried direct to Hamburg by open sea. Englishinterests are equally concerned, remembering that British shippingnaturally frequents the western coast in preference to the oftenfrozen and dangerous and always intricate Baltic Sea, with its highinsurance rates.
