Text Appearing Before Image:
fishing here was from the very verge or curve of the fall, where thetrout were playing. Strange to say, nonewent over, as I ascertained by carefulwatching below. Indeed, there seemed tobe none In the circular basin below. I could,at least, see none, neither could I get a rise, though I tried repeatedly. When hooked,on the verge of the fall, the fish alwaysstarted up stream. As there were two feetof water going over the fall with a velocityof five or six miles an hour, or more, thestrength and activity of the trout can beImagined. These trout were the mostbeautiful and highly colored I have everseen; their bellies a bright orange-red, andtheir sides sprinkled with gold and Intenselycrimson spots, and their fins edged withjet black and pure white. The colorationwas unusually vivid and pronounced. Lake Edward From this camp we could hear all day the workmen on the railroad blasting nearLake Edward, which was but a few milesaway, and which has since become so notedas a fishing resort. lOO

3O co OQ The Trout This was, in truth, a virgin trout stream. No artificial fly had ever before fretted thesurface of Its pristine waters. The onlysign of man was the mark on a tree, nearour camp, where a chip had been cut outby a trapper, years before. Just above ourcamp was a narrow trail leading from thecliffs to the river, but the only tracks werethose of caribou, bears, coons, and porcu-pines. There are other species of trout in There AreAmerican waters that are fished for In much ^^^^^^the same way as for brook trout; they are ^ the rainbow, steelhead, red-throat, golden,Dolly Varden and Sunapee trout; also theintroduced European brown trout. Thesevarious species are being Introduced Introut waters in a number of states, so thatIt may be well to briefly refer to some oftheir characteristics. In the Rocky Mountain region there are Rocky Mountainthree groups of trout belonging to the Sp®^^Salmo genus—the steelhead, rainbow andred-throat, or cut-throat as it Is sometimescalled. T
