to J have not been in Florida since the win- Date ter of 1896-7, but even then it had greatly changed from the old Florida I knew as farback as 1878. At the present day my oldcruising and camping grounds near Rock-ledge, Lake Worth and Miami are famouswinter resorts, with large and commodioushotels whose luxurious appointments andservice are unsurpassed in the world. Both the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, aswell as the interior of the State, are nowwell-populated by Northern people, mostlyengaged in raising sub-tropical fruits andearly vegetables. Marshy lands, once theresort of innumerable water-fowl, have beendrained and cultivated. The pine forestsand flat woods where once the cowboyreigned supreme, and where the deer andwild turkey roamed at will, have been deci-mated or destroyed by sawmills and turpen-tine stills. The rookeries of the cypressswamps and wooded keys have been laidwaste by the plume hunter, so that theflamingo, pink curlew and egret are now butempty sounding names. 178

Florida Fish and Fishing But while the greed and Improvidenceof commercial fishermen have greatly re-duced the numbers of not only mullet, butredfish, sheepshead, sea-trout and other bayfishes, there still remains the best and mostvaried fishing In the world for the anglerwho cares more for real sport than a bigcreel. In the brackish bays the channel bass, Fishing Galorecavalla, snook, sea-trout, croaker, sailorschoice, etc., w^IU furnish all the sport,either with bait or fly, that the reasonableangler can desire. So, also, at the Inletsand passes he may enjoy the matchlesssport afforded by the ladyfish and ten-pounder. Along the reefs and keys at theend of the peninsula he may troll or casthis lure for the kingfish, Spanish mackerel,amber jack and bonlto. Along the rockyshores the groupers and large snappers willfreely respond to his baited hook, while inthe channels about the keys those beautifulpan-fish, the grunts, porgles, snappers andother fishes of the coral banks, may betaken
