ery our jour-ney is continued in the direction of camp and we soon reach the rail-road where we stop to rest and shell the corn. Toward evening wecall at a cabin and ask permission to remain over night. We noticethe woman of the house is frightened and cannot really be blamed forwe have but little clothing resembling a uniform, only the U. S. plateson our belts and cartridge boxes to distinguish us from the manybushwackers who have infested tlie country since the beginning ofthe war. Much of the clothing now worn by Union soldiers encamp-ed at Strawberry Plains has been picked up and bought and consistsof garments of every description regardless of cut or color. Thewoman finally allows us to enter the cabin and we are given seatsat the old fire place where dutch oven and crane and other old typecooking utensils are seen. Footprints Through Dixie woman relates some of the torments suffered by Union people inthis neighborhood since the beginning of the war. Her husband hasbeen driven from home and for a time was secreted in the hills andcaves, finally working his way through the mountains to Kentuckywhere he with other loyal Kentucky and Tennessee refugees were or-ganized into companies and regiments of Union soldiers. The wo-man sajS Union citizens have been shot or hung or forced into therebel army. Others who have escaped have suffered loss of prop-erty left behind which was either carried away or burned. She alsoinforms us that the man from whom we confiscated the meat andcorn is a rebel who has aided rebel conscripting officers in locatingcitizens who are suspected of being loyal to the Union, and has ason serving in the rebel ranks. We remain over night and to avoidsurprise from roving bushwhackers we bunk down in front of theonly door in the cabin and rest undisturbed. We leave early on thefollow
