Hispaintings of open-air subjects are by no means theobvious statements of fact which come so oftenfrom the figure painter who goes out to look atnature in his spare moments ; they are felt andunderstood in a way that is possible only to theman who can see beyond mere actualities intothe subtleties which nature suggests, and who isby temperament responsive to poetic inspiration,There is unquestionably poetic sentiment of a verydelightful type in such pictures as the Winter Sun- rise on the Aide, the decoratively treated Heming-ford Grey, the Harbour Lights, Lowestoft, and thespacious composition, Exeter from the CountessWeir; and in others, like the Ancient Fort, Suffolk,Christchurch, Twilight: the Banks of the Orwell,Sundown, Orford, and On the Waveney
