Summary[edit]
DescriptionGerman Submarine U-955 under attack in the Bay of Biscay, 7 June 1944 (AWM SUK12929).JPG |
English: A night photograph taken by the Short Sunderland aircraft "S" of No. 201 Squadron RAF during an attack on the German submarine U-955 on 7 June 1944 in the Bay of Biscay, north of Cape Ortegal. The three large balls of light are flares dropped by the Sunderland to light the U-boat before the attack. The outline of the enemy craft can be seen in the swirling foam (bottom left). As the captain of the Sunderland, 1139324 Flying Officer Leslie Harold Baveystock DFC DFM, RAFVR, sighted the U-boat, it crash-dived and the Sunderland patiently patrolled the area until the U-boat surfaced. It was sunk with all hands by depth charges. |
