Medallion of Totila, Ostrogoth King of Southern Italy
Description
English: This relief is from a series of medallion portraits of early kings of Italy, for which see Walters 27.485. Totila was elected king of the Ostrogoths in Italy in 541. Until his death in 552 he was constantly at war with the Eastern Roman emperors in Constantinople over control of Italy. He captured Rome twice but was unable to hold it. He was finally defeated by Byzantine forces in 552.
