ath, this cross beingon the antique mound, once a Saxon tumulus, whichat present may be seen, crowned with a few stunted firs,nearly opposite the Blackheath entrance to the Park.The cross was there as late as the time of Charles II. It was also in the Park, beneath an old oak tree,that the same monarch set him down to listen for thegun which, by his command, was to be fired whenAnne Boleyn was beheaded. Some have recordedthis as having taken place in Epping Forest, wherethe King was said to have been hunting, but theweight of evidence is in favour of the Park. On the 29th of May, 1648, a portion of theArmy, under Lord Goring, connected with the risingin Kent, encamped in Greenwich Park awaitingpermission to pass through the City. 1661—Paid ^30 to the Princes Surgeon forattendance to cure Sir William Buttons boy, whowas shot in the head with an arrow at GreenwichTower. HISTORIC HOUSES. 27 OConnell, Esq., and a Mr. Carney, when the latterwas severely wounded. OConnell had to find bailfor £500. Chestnut-beating, in order to remove the fruit,was engaged in even at a late date, as we find that in1846 the Park keeper received £30 towards expensesof thrashing the fruit from the trees. The Rangers House.—In 1688 a narrow strip ofland, 30 feet in width and about 1,300 feet in length,on the border of Blackheath, adjoining the Park, waslet on lease from the Commissioners of Woods andForests. In 1697 this strip of land was added to,and its width increased to 80 feet ; and it wasre-leased at an annual rent of 6s. 8d. In 1753, thestrip was divided into three plots, and the centre plotwas leased to Lord Chesterfield for 23 years, at thefull rent of 6s. 8d. per annum.
