The capital of Emilia, and theseat of a University founded inthe fifth cent., is one of the mostancient cities in Italy. It isbeautifully situated on a plain atthe foot of the lower slopes of theApennines, and is divided into fourquarters, the older of which havea heavy, antique, and gloomyaspect, and strikingly contrastwith the well-paved thoroughfaresand fine buildings of the modernportions. The footpaths of theprincipal streets are covered witharcades. The public edifices arenumerous, and many of themmagnificent.
