Summary
[edit]DescriptionHawkins Pond, Bucks Head, near Horsham, West Sussex. - geograph.org.uk - 27038.jpg |
English: Hawkins Pond, Bucks Head, near Horsham, West Sussex. A classic "Hammer Pond", of several that are found in the area. Taking advantage of the long narrow valleys, a dam was built and the water supply used to drive machinery associated with the iron workings (e.g. watermill powered hammers) that were widespread in this area several hundred years ago. Iron ore occurs in the local geology in this far western end of The Weald. Photo taken from the road that runs across the top of the dam. View is in a NE direction |
