iese, but there arefive substances whose detection is of great importance, andwhich are discovered with comparative ease. These substancesare (1) albumin; (2) blood; (3) grape-sugar; (4) pus and tube-casts; (5) bile. (1) Albumin is present in various conditions mentionedunder Albuminuria, and may be recognized by the followingtests: (a) Boiling, after the addition of a few drops of acid, producesa copious white cloud of coagulated albumin. (b) Hellers test.—Place some strong nitric acid in the bot-tom of a test-tube, and carefully pour in urine above it. If theurine contains albumin, a dense white line forms where the twofluids meet. (c) Picric acid.—^Drop some strong solution of picric acid intoa test-tube containing urine. If albumin is present each dropcarries down a white cloud of coagulated albumin. (2) Blood is present in acute Brights disease, in congestion eS(N o be - cc -*^ ^ b fl- « o3 t, fl ^a tf « g.2 bc (U^^ a^ tH O . -.^^ S.2 2 a^ « ^ - - a o a~ -73 O tH CO ^ (O D

If a drop or two of tincture of guaiacresin is mixed with a little of the suspected urine to form a whitefluid in a test-tube, and some ozonic ether or oxidized turpentineis poured in above this mixture, a deep-blue color appears wherethe two fluids join, when blood is present. A similar result isgiven, however, by the urine of patients who have been takingiodide of potassium, so that for absolute certainty a drop of theurine must be examined under the microscope to find if blood-cells are actually present. (3) Geape-sugae is a sign of diabetes when it is present con-stantly in the urine. It may also be found following upon a dietthat contains a great deal of sugar—a harmless condition knownas glycosuria.
