Apart from the services he rendered toEngland by his wise government of the Church in its greatcrisis, we owe to Parker another inestimable debt; for it was hewho first set about collecting and preserving on a serious scalethe memorials of our religious and secular history. He ransackedthe buildings of the dissolved monasteries and the bookshops ofEurope for manuscripts of Early English chronicles, many ofwhich he edited himself, while for some he supervised the workof other editors. He got Saxon types founded, and he projecteda dictionary of the Anglo-Saxon language. He was himself thelearned author of voluminous works on the early history of theChurch in Britain, and was especially the historian of his ownsee. At his death he bequeathed his own magnificent Ubrary tohis beloved college at Cambridge.
