THE MANBECK FAMILY. (r^rom a photograph taken in 1005.) Anna Manbeek, aged S6 years (since deceased); Isaac I. Manbeck,aged 63 years; Herbert (!. INIanl^eck, aged 41 years; A. Blanch(> Man-beck, aged 17 years. The upper story of the buildingswas not divided into apartments asnow but all in one room with a bedin each corner. Carpets were un-known and the floors were scrubbedonce a week. Mother used to scrubhalf of the floor and dry it then putthe children on that half until the other half was scrubbed. In thosedays women had no washboards orwashmachines, but boiled the clothesand laid them on a bench and beatthem with a paddle and did somerubbing with the hands, in thatway they were cleaned. —SamuelBachman. The neighbors in acommunity hadmany different methods of amuse-ment. In the fall they had apple-butter parties; a couple would stir ortake care of the kettle, the otherswould pair and slice apples, andwhen the applebutter was done theywould lick the kettle. Duringhaymaking they often had moon- light mowing parties to mow grass.About ten oclock they had a goodsupper and something to drink.They enjoyed work. The ladies hadquilting parties and after the quiltwas done the young men in theneighborhood would also assembleand dance until late at night.—P.Michael Beaver.
