EARLIEST HISTORY. 17 memorable expedition consisted of only two galliots andnine men, being a corporal, five private soldiers, threeIndians, the captain of the vessel, and the two fathers. On the 19th of October, 1697, the little party ofadventurers went ashore at Loreto, and were kindlyreceived by about fifty natives, who were induced to kneeldown and kiss the crucifix. After twenty years of earnest labor, privation, danger,and spiritual success, Father Salva-Tierra was recalled toMexico by the new Viceroy, for consultation.
