To this purchasehe made repeated additions, until he owned at onetime two thousand three hundred and eighty acres.He now owns one thousand and eighty acres, most ofwhich is in the town of Woodhull. Mr. Shaft has identified himself largely with theinterests of Woodimll. He laid out the thrivingvillage which bears ins name, and was prominent inthe location and construction of the railroad whichpasses through it. He is a liberal supporter of edu-cational and religious enterprises, anti has done idspart to advance the best interests of tiie town. Hehas been married five times, first to Ciiristiana Olsavcrin 1829; slie was a fine type of the pioneer woman,and was highly esteemed. His present wife, netJidia E. Parks, is a lady of much culture andrefinement. Mr. Shaft is now in his seventy-fifthyear, and is still hale and hearty. His name isprominent in tlie history of Woodhull, and he willalwavs be remembered as a valuable citizen.

CLINTON COUNTY. CHAPTER XLV. BOUNDARIES-TOPOGHAPHy-MINERAL RE-SOUBCES. Location and Natural Features—The Coal-Measures—Salt Springs—Results of Explorations for Coal and Salt. Clinton County lies directly west of Shiawassee, theprincipal meridian of the State forniinc; the boundary-line between them. On the north Clinton is bounded byGratiot County, on the west by Ionia, and on the sotith bythe counties of Ingham and Eaton. The Grand River,flowini; northwestwardly from the latter county, enter.s Clin-ton, and, traversing the extreme southwestern corner of itsterritory for a few miles, passes across its west boundary intoIonia. The other principal streams are the Maple andLooking-Glass Rivers, both of which enter the countyacross its eastern border, fiom Shiawassee. The former,crossing the northeast corner of Clinton in a general coursetowards the northwest, passes out into Gratiot County,through the southern part of which it meanders for sometwenty miles, and then returns to Clin
