rd Kuog and on the summit of the ridge was asmall house where the headquarters of the Confederate armies were estab-lished. As the guns tolled the signal, twenty thousand men rushed forward.The big siege guns in the forts at Chattanooga roared above the light artilleryand musketry in the valley, sending their screeching missiles over the tree-tops against the face of the ridge. No sooner had the lines advanced thanthe enemys rifle pits became ablaze, and the whole face of the ridge ablazing volcano. Though exposed to a terrible fire, our men pushed onrapidly, working their way through felled trees and other obstructions untilthey came upon the rifle pits. By a bold dash they broke through the worksin several places, catching the enemy in rear and flank by reverse fires andthey were thrown into confusion and sought safety in precipitate flight upthe ridge. Here many prisoners and small arms were captured and theorder* of the commanding general successful!y carried out. But this did not

The routed enemy struggled up the steep declivity, threw themselvesbehind the third and fourth lines of works and from the cannons on the crest:ame a hail of shot and shell. To stand still was death, to fall back was not3ompassed by orders and was forbidden by every impulse of the brave men,who, with no stragglers to mar the symmetry of their lines or make scarcely1 single exception to universal gallantry, had moved so boldly upon the foe.There was a halt of but a few minutes for breath and to reform lines, thenwith a sudden impulse all started up the side of the ridge. There are times in battle when brave men do not need commanders andthis was one. The enemy held a position of wonderful strength, severalhundred feet above them, where nature had provided a fortress.
