Entirely underestimating those labors, (of which indeed butfew can form an adequate conception,) he had been quite too thought-less of the claims of a body he had so long been accustomed to subjectto his purpose, and only awoke to a discovery of the error when it wastoo late. With this melancholy conviction, he announced the comple-tion of the work to a friend in the modest and touching sentence :— The book, poor as it is, has been my coffin. He left the country for England under a presentiment that he shouldnever return. For the first time in his life, departure was shaded withforeboding.
