Esztergom is the seat of the Prince-Primate ofHungary, lord of many possessions and vastestates. On looking back when we had steamed away, thedome still loomed against the sky, immense, whenother buildings had faded out of sight. We touched at Visegrad, a mountain whereKings of the eleventh century resided, and nowruined walls around its barren peak alone mark thesite of what was called an earthly paradise. Villasclustering round its foot looked gay among thetrees. The glow of a golden sunset was behind thepurple mountains before we left them to pass againthrough level plains, and, far away before us, lowdown on the horizon, a faint dun-coloured hazetold of the presence of a great city. FROM AUSTRIA TO ORSOVA 5 Danube divided into two arms, which, reuniting,formed a long, low island. Again it divided closeto the city, flowing round the beautiful MargaretIsland — its noble trees, its pleasure-groundsand pavilions. Young men in outriggers skimmedsilently by, or landed in the gloom of overhangingfoliage. The sky, full of gentle gradations, wascharged with the last warm light from the afterglowbehind us — an all-pervading light which, softlyfalling, united all things in one great harmony.
