We touched at Visegrad, a mountain whereKings of the eleventh century resided, and nowruined walls around its barren peak alone mark thesite of what was called an earthly paradise. Villasclustering round its foot looked gay among thetrees. The glow of a golden sunset was behind thepurple mountains before we left them to pass againthrough level plains, and, far away before us, lowdown on the horizon, a faint dun-coloured hazetold of the presence of a great city.
