sometimes the place of stones (in the second and third walls). The baseof the walls is composed of small clay cakes, yellow earth, grey or brown o26 THE TEIHD, THE BURNT CITY. (Chap. VII. or black ashes, and fragments of bricks laid in all directions. There arealso large pieces of charcoal, marking the place of the beams of which thefloor seems to have consisted. The coatings of the walls are composed of the same mag/ma as thematter with which the stones are joined. The finest coatings aresmoothed, not with a trowel, but with a sort of whitish-yellow clay-milk,which has left a layer as thick as paper; there are coatings of two orthree such layers. This painting, if we may call it so, follows all thesinuosities of the coating, which itself follows those of the wall. Thisclay-milk has not a uniform colour; it borrows its colour from the groundwhich it covers ; it consequently seems to have been made simply withwater, with which the surface of the coating has repeatedly been washed.
