ANTON MAUVE 28âCATTLE AND LANDSCAPE I t ^ The sky occupies two-thirds of this composi-tion, and across it stretches a low band of cloudsbroadening to the upper left-hand corner of thecanvas, suggesting the moist atmosphere of theNetherlands. A wide meadow reaches away to alow line of distant trees, and here and there peas-ants at work indicate the busy season of the hayharvest. In the near foreground are two cows,the focus of the picture. Signed at the right, A. Mauve. Height, 9 inches; length, 14^ inches.

Nearby lies a brown dog half hidden by the rankgrass. Beyond the little group are a rose bushcovered with pink blossoms, the corner of thehouse with trees, and a stretch of distant riverlandscape. Signed at the right, Weilbuth. Height, 11 inches; width, 7 inches. J. JAMES TISSOT 30âON THE SERPENTINE This subject was evidently suggested by awalk in Hyde Park on a summer afternoon. Inthe foreground are a lady and a little girl leaningagainst the iron railing along the terrace overthe water, and a man seated on a lawn bench.In the distance is a high-arched bridge with footpassengers and the familiar hansom, and, below,the quiet water reflects the arches and the greattrees beyond.
