ht still brood over the low-lying meadows,lending a pearly quality to the atmosphere and blending dis-tant objects into a vague mass of form and color. Upon theright the river bank slopes sharply upward, and the summitis occupied by a low, rambling farmhouse shaded by severaltrees. The plaster walls and red roof make an agreeable con-trast with the green of the foliage, and a brilliant note is addedto the composition as an errant sunray strikes one corner ofthe building, making it flash into pure white. By the watersedge a number of women are washing clothes, a man is balingout one of the boats which are moored close by, and awoman is carrying a jar of water to the house. The sky iscovered with a mass of white cloud, through which appear afew patches of blue, and the still surface of the water reflectsthe varying aspects of the heavens and the deep green of thetrees. With theirclothing draped loosely about their lower limbs, their shapelyarms and soft bosoms shining in the sunlight, they sport witha crowd of little cupids who Hit through the air or run merryraces upon the flower-bejeweled grass. In the distance is theglint of water as a river flows gently by, and beyond the eyeranges over a verdant landscape to a mountain, blue uponthe horizon.
